My computer made a loud pop this morning and went black. Now it won’t turn on?

liz *no crazy way?!* asked:
The plug that it was plugged into says that it’s “building wiring fault” and so we think somethings wrong with the plug, and so we plugged the computer into a different outlet, but the computer won’t turn on. What happened to my computer? Are we going to have to call a repair man, or is our computer dead? I have a white iMac, and its about 3 years old.

sounds like a problem with your power supply problem. If you’re out of warranty get a price quote before doing anything if it cost more then 500 don’t bother just buy a new one. If you don’t have a proper computer surge protector you might want to pick one up. Chances are you probably encounter a surge that blew your hardware.
good luck
Here is why
If you heard a pop from the computer, chances are you blew at least 1 capacitor, either from the motherboard or power supply. You never replace parts in a power supply, just replace if that is faulty. If on the motherboard, you would have to check the board out for shorts and and connectivity.
Most likely bottom line is get another computer if it’s the motherboard.
