Why isn’t my iPod touch working well? Why is my computer recognizing it as a camera?

I have a DELL Windows XP computer and I just got an iPod Touch (2nd Gen) for my graduation. I plug in the iPod because when I click on it has the cable showing it being connected to itunes. Now, when I plug in the ipod cable into my computer, it’ll recognize it as a camera. First it recognizes it as an ipod, then a camera. Also, why is itunes saying my music store wont work. It says check your internet connection or try again later.
Also, when I downloaded itunes after it installed it asked if i wanted to install the newer version, but the person who was doing it for me x’d out of it.
It’s 8 GB.

Its being recognized as a camera because it is capable of having pictures on it. Dont freak out this is normal. Try opening iTunes and than connecting the iPod. Minimize the camera thing, dont exit out of it.

Every single ipod touch is automatically recognized as a camera. Plug it into the computer and itunes should recognize it (make sure you have the latest itunes). The only way to actually go in and browse the files is by jailbreaking, which is a whole other thing that i will not get into right now, but if you have questions about it feel free to contact me. However, by updating itunes, your device will give you a bout 2gb of space that you can use as a flash drive. Atleast for the 8gb touch this is true.
