Is it possible for a defective DVD drive to cause a computer to crash?

I have a Compaq Presario 2190US laptop w/ a 2.4GHz Celeron, 512MB RAM & WinXP Pro. w/SP2. Every now & then my system crashes and I get the blue screen of death. Usually I get 1 of 2 msgs. Both state that “A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down…” etc. The technical information on one msg says *** STOP: 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0XECF27249, 0X81CAD50C, 0X00000000)
NAVEX15.SYS – Address ECF27249 base at ECEBF000, DateStamp 45b5675a

The other msg starts the same way and adds “PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA”. The technical information says: *** STOP: 0X00000050 (0X951F74E0, 0X00000001, 0X8054AE34, 0X00000000)

Whichever msg comes up, it then proceeds to dump the physical memory to disk.

My DVD combo drive skips around DVDs (frequently if I try to go fast forward or backward). Recently, I used a CD drive cleaning CD. It seems better. Might be coincidence, though. Prior to cleaning the drive, the laptop crashed even when playing MP3s off the HDD.
